How Do I Sign Up?

To sign up for Supportive Housing solutions, the client should first get connected with San Mateo Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. Here are multiple links to help get you started.

Option 1:
Access Line

If you need supportive housing or related services, you can bring by calling the San Mateo Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) Access Call Center.  The phone number is (800) 686-0101. (TTY for hearing impaired individuals is 711).

When you call, you will speak with a trained staff member at BHRS who will ask about your special circumstances. For example, they will ask about your mental health, substance use history, and housing need to assess your need and eligibility. Based on the screening, you may be referred to programs or housing providers in the county who manage supportive housing programs or other services that can help you get stabilized and on housing waitlists. BHRS accepts all eligible residents, so calling does not require private insurance.

Be ready to provide basic information about yourself. This may include your full name, date of birth, and contact information. Other information that may be asked include household information (number of people, ages, disabilities), income details if available, and any current mental health or medical conditions that you may have.

Some follow-up questions that may be helpful to ask when you call the Access Line include:

  • “Do I need to bring any documents to apply, such as an ID, income information, or proof of disability?”

  • “Are there any programs specifically for people with mental health conditions/people with disabilities/seniors/veterans?”

  • “How long is the waitlist, and how will I be contacted when a unit is available?”

  • “Are there any other services that BHRS can offer that may help me? Such as medication management, case management, mental health assistance, or substance use treatment?”

It is recommended that you have a pen and paper available to take notes and information down for future reference. If English is not your first language, you may request an interpreter.

The Housing Authority of the County of San Mateo (HACSM) offers a waitlist for affordable housing opportunities. The online portal, called Rent Café PHA, is available 24/7 and can be found at www.mysmchousing.com.

Applicants to the waitlist can register on the portal to be considered for tenant- based rental assistance or project-based assistance when it becomes available.

The Moving To Work tenant-based waitlist is continuously open. If you are on the waiting list and would like to check your application status, please log in to your portal account.

If you need assistance with applying for a waitlist, you can email csteam@smchousing.org or call (650) 802-3352 or TDD at (650) 802-3377.

Rent Café Instructions are available in both English and Spanish.

Option 3:
OCFA

If you are seeking supportive housing for a family member or loved one, you can also contact the Office of Consumer and Family Affairs (OCFA). This department focuses on supporting individuals, families, and caregivers who are using, or have used, mental health and substance use services.

The OCFA is part of San Mateo’s mental health services and exists to support people who are receiving, or have received, behavioral health care, as well as their families. OCFA helps clients and their families understand their rights, learn about available programs, and access community resources. They provide
advocacy and guidance, helping to resolve concerns with service providers and connecting people to support groups, peer programs, and other resources.

By serving as a bridge between clients, families, and the County’s mental health system, OCFA ensures that the voices of clients and families are heard in shaping policies and improving current services.
